Many years ago, (early 2000’s) in a land far away (Chicago suburban area), Lane Hamm and I were on the same Church softball team. I was the team co-captain and played catcher. Like most team catchers I pretty much directed the position of the players on the field. I always wanted Lane to play Center field, (think John Fogerty's song, Centerfield here). Lane was the epitome of a fleet footed Center fielder! Lane always would run over and back up the right or left fielder even when they were just making a routine catch.
One time, with the bases loaded, there was a deep fly ball (no fences for home runs) hit down the line... our left fielder slipped on some wet grass and was down. I thought, "that's a Grand Slam!" But NO! Out of his Center field position Lane ran all the way to the left field line. He laid out vertically, slammed his body against some hard dirt, rolled over a few times… and was very still for way to long… Then his arm went straight up, with the glove on his hand, and the ball in the web of his glove! Inning over! It was the greatest Church Softball, inning-ending, catch in the history of church softball! Well, maybe just the history of our team! Good times!
